Splitting and combining files

You can use Archiver to split a file into smaller parts. This is useful, for example, when a file is too large to be sent in a single email or to fit onto a single USB memory stick. By splitting the file you can send the file across multiple emails or save it onto multiple memory sticks. With Archiver you can also combine the files back again later.

To split a file:

Step 1

Drag in the file.

Step 2

Click Split.

Step 3

Type the size into which you want to split your file in the “Chunk” box.

Step 4

From the quantity pop-up menu choose whether the size you entered is in kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB).

Step 5

Click Split.

To combine a file:

Step 1

Drag in all or one of the parts of a split file.

Step 2

Click Combine.

To reduce the size of the split files, select Bzip or 7zip compression. Note that this will have little effect if the file you want to split is already compressed, as is the case with most music, video and image files.

To verify the integrity of the combined file, select “Checksum” when splitting the file. When you later combine the files, Archiver will verify that the combined file is identical to the originally split file. Note that 7zip compression does not offer integrity verification.
